San Diego Patio Cover Permit Requirements include (subject to change – please check with your Designs 4 You Remodeling project manager for the latest information):
Patio Cover Requirements
- Patio covers must be one-story structures not more than 12 feet in height above grade.
- Patio covers must be used for recreational, outdoor living purposes only, and cannot be used as carports, garages, storage rooms, or habitable rooms.
- Patio covers must be open on one or more sides.
- Patio covers may be attached or detached to an existing building.
- Patio covers must be at least 5 feet from all property lines.
- Patio covers must comply with all other applicable San Diego building codes.
Carport Requirements
- Carports must be entirely open on two or more sides.
- Carports must be at least 5 feet from all property lines.
- Carports must comply with all other applicable San Diego building codes.
General Permit Requirements
- A permit is required for all patio covers and carports in San Diego that are 300 square feet or larger.
