How Much Does it Cost to Remodel Your Backyard in San Diego County?

san diego landscape design and hardscaping remodel

Investing in your backyard is an investment in your home and property. Backyards are where we spend the majority of our time outdoors at home. They are a sanctuary and can range from luxurious oasis to simple and functional. Most of our customers meet somewhere in the middle to attain their specific goals. One of the more popular questions that our project managers get from homeowners is a simple one… how much is it going to cost to complete my backyard remodel?

Unfortunately, a direct answer to that question is difficult, as we see so many different variations of landscape/hardscape design and installation, and many different size and types of properties. Often here in San Diego we see complications with slopes and canyons, or other areas of uneven elevation. With those scenarios, it’s important to weigh the options. One option, if possible, is to grade the landscape, or make it even with the majority of the property. Another option is to use retaining walls to create tiers on the slope, and a third option is to create an extended deck which overhangs any drop in elevation. All of these solutions require drastically different preparation and budgeting. It’s very property-specific when discussing possible engineering and designs. Be sure to have your project managed and constructed by companies with extensive experience. The last thing you want is for someone to get hurt on your property or have the new construction be a liability to your family or neighbors.

Generally speaking, the cost of a full backyard remodel in San Diego county for 2024 ranges from a very small to medium remodel at $5000 – $50,000+ with limited concrete and hardscape, compared to a large property with multiple retaining walls and expansive hardscape/landscape installation can be $100,000+. One of the most difficult pieces of estimating and predicting landscape remodel cost are the materials. Depending on the year, customer demand, and the overall supply chain, material cost can vary greatly. What’s important is to find a long term solution to your needs and wants for the perfect landscape for your yard. These often include water features and pools, concrete, and of course retaining walls and any structural hardscaping. We have built many large retaining walls that finished with over $50,000 in costs. Pools and water features generally range from $40,000 – $150,000+

How To Save Money On Your San Diego Backyard Remodel

Let’s take a look at the more affordable and money-saving options when it comes to remodeling your backyard. You’ll likely want to reduce water usage and maintenance costs, the highest recurring costs (besides repairs) of any landscape or hardscape implementation. Maintenance comes in many forms, from cutting/mowing any grass (save by replacing with artificial turf) to trimming of trees and bushes. Most of the bushes and tree work is due to non-native species and types of plants that don’t generally do well in our climate. These types of evergreens and non-native plants can also lead to heavy water usage, as they aren’t aligned with our drier climate here in San Diego. Water usage can be reduced with xeriscaping and drought tolerant landscape design.

Your property may also qualify for rebates based on waterwise/water-saving landscape design and implementation choices, which we outlined in our article on Watersmart & Waterscape Rebate Programs.
